What does Dial Help do?

Dial Help is a licensed substance abuse prevention center providing Crisis Intervention, Counseling Services, Victim Assistance Services, and Substance Abuse Prevention Services. Our philisophy is to "help people help themselves" by providing immediate, accessible, confidential, and affordable services to the communities we serve. Founded on the belief that access to 24-hour support and assistance is imperative to the health of a community, our mission is: "To promote the physical, emotional, and social well-being of our community by providing problem solving assistance, crisis intervention, counseling, referrals, education, and training."

Established in 1971, Dial Help is one of only four independent crisis centers in the state and the onlu one located in Michigan's 16,000 square mile Upper Peninsula. A non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation managed by a Board of Directors, the agency currently employs a staff of nineteen.

Who may call Dial Help?

Anyone may call Dial Help for crisis intervention, information, and referrals.

What is crisis intervention?

Crisis Intervention is a process of helpful assistance for a return to normalcy to someone who is suffering from a traumatic reaction to an abnormal event.

How do I know if my problem is really a crisis?

Everyone reacts differently to life changes. You may benefit from crisis intervention if you are feeling anxious, angry, depressed, or simply overwhelmed due to a recent event.

Will Dial Help solve my problem?

Dial Help cannot solve problems, but we can help you identify your problem and work with you until you are able to formulate a plan of action.

Does Dial Help offer referrals to other organizations?

Yes, referrals are made from all of Dial Help’s programs when appropriate and/or upon request.

What are Dial Help hours?

Dial Help is open 24/7, 365 days a year.

Do I have to call Dial Help or can I walk in?

You may choose to call or walk in to Dial Help.

Are Dial Help services confidential?

All Dial Help services are confidential, however Dial Help follows the regulations of the Mental Health Code & the Child Protection Law. The regulations of both refer to the safety of individuals.

Does Dial Help charge for its services?

Dial Help does not charge for crisis intervention or victim services.

How long has Dial Help been helping?

Dial Help began as a grass roots agency called “Dial Drug” in 1971 to assist members of the community with substance abuse issues.

Is Dial Help a government agency?

Dial Help is a non-profit agency with 501 (c)(3) status.

What kind of training and qualifications do Dial Help employees have?

All Dial Help employees have at minimum a bachelor’s degree and complete 40 hours of training and 50 hours of shadowing in Dial Help Units.

I am a minor, can I use your services without my parents' permission?

Anyone of any age may call the Helpline for crisis intervention, information or referrals. Some age restrictions may apply to extended face to face services.

How can I seek help for a family member or a friend?

Dial Help can provide information and referrals or assist with crisis intervention and victim services.

Will Dial Help call the police?

Dial Help will contact the police only if a caller or client is a danger to him/herself or others according to the Mental Health Code. Dial Help does not have to report sexual assault, date rape, or other crime unless there is a violation of the Mental Health Code or Child Protection Law.

Does Dial Help endorse or advocate abortion?

Dial help remains neutral on the subject of abortion and respects the individual’s decisions regarding all personal issues.

Who do I contact about scheduling a Dial Help Prevention program for my school or organization?

You can call the Helpline (482-4357) and ask to speak with the Prevention Program Coordinator.

Does Dial Help have opportunites for volunteering or internships?

Dial Help highly values it’s volunteers and interns. Both internships and volunteering opportunities are available for the Crisis Unit. Volunteers are also utilized as on call advocates on the Sexual Assault Response Team and the Victim Services Unit. Other volunteering opportunities include maintenance, fundraising events, and technical assistance.
